Accessing Google Mail

Google Mail is best accessed via the Chrome browser. If you don't already have it on your school computer, please see your building's Tech Assistant. If you don't have it on your personal computer, it is a free download from http://www.google.com/chrome/

However, Chrome is not the only way to access your Google Mail, and here are some other methods you can use.

For Android Devices (a.k.a. Droid, Google Phone): There are a lot of variations on Andriod, but the process on each should be similar to this....

  1. Navigate to "Settings", and find "Accounts"
  2. If you were previously using your iOS device to access our Exchange server, you should start by deleting that account. It will be listed under accounts, and probably called "Exchange". Click on it followed by "settings" to get to a screen where you can delete it (on my Droid it is a trashcan icon).
  3. Then, click "Add Account" and select "Google".
  4. Fill in your email address (username@bownet.org) and your Google password followed by "Done".
  5. You'll be asked to setup a credit card, but you can skip this step if yhou wish by pressing "Not Now"
  6. To access your GMail, go to the Gmail app. If you have multiple Google Accounts setup, you can switch between them by clicking on the mailbox icon in the upper left.
  7. Your Google Calendar and Contacts will now appear in the Calendar and Contacts apps.

For iOS Devices (a.k.a iPhone, iPad, iPod):

  1. Navigate to "Settings", and then "Mail,Contacts, Calendars"
  2. If you were previously using your iOS device to access our Exchange server, you should start by deleting that account. It will be listed under accounts, and probably called "Exchange". Click on the arrow to the right of its name to open its settings, and then press the "Delete Account" button to delete the Exchange account.
  3. Then, click "Add Account" and select "GMail".
  4. Fill in name, email address (username@bownet.org), your Google password, and a Description if you want something other than what it gives as a default, and then click "Next" followed by "Save".
  5. You should now see your Google Calendar(r) in iOS Calendar, and your Google Mail in iOS Mail.

Outlook\Entourage (OSX): Don't do it... use the Chrome browser or Mac Mail (below)

Outlook (Windows): I'm using Outlook 2010, but the steps should be similar for other versions

  1. If Outlook is already running, exit the program
  2. go to Start Menu>Control Panel and search for "Mail"
  3. Click on it followed by "Show Profiles", select your exiting Exchange profile, and click "Remove" followed by yes, and okay
  4. Launch Outlook, enter a profile name (ex. google), and press "OK"
  5. Select "Manually configure server settings or additional server types" and press "Next"
  6. Select "Internet E-Mail" and press "Next"
  7. Enter your name, and email address
    1. Account type = imap
    2. Incoming mail server = imap.gmail.com
    3. Outgoing mail server = smtp.gmail.com
    4. username = email address and password is your Google password
    5. press "more settings" and navigate to the "Advanced" tab
      1. Incoming server = 993 and use SSL encryption
      2. Outgoing server = 465 and use SSL encryption
    6. navigate to the "Outgoing Server" tab and select "My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication and check off "Use same settings as my incoming mail server", followed by "OK", then "Next", then "Finish"
  8. Note: This only gets you your Google email. The calendar and contacts do not work in Outlook

Mac Mail (OSX): I'm using Mountain Lion (OSX 10.8.4), but the steps should be similar for older versions of OSX.

  1. Launch the Mail app
  2. Open Mail>Preferences.. and click on the "Accounts" tab
  3. If you already have our Exchange server listed, you will need to remove that account first (click and hit minus sign)
  4. Hit plus sign to add Google account. Enter your email address, Google password and press "Continue"
  5. Mac Mail is smart enough to add your Google Calendar to the Calendar app, and your Google+ account to Messages app
  6. You can also add your Google Contact to the Contacts app as follows:
    1. Launch the Contacts app
    2. Open Contact>Preferences.. and click on the "Accounts" tab
    3. Select "On My Mac", click off the "Syncronize with Google" switch, enter your email address and Google password

Windows Mail (Windows 8):

  1. Launch the Mail App
  2. Swipe from the wipe, select "Settings", and click on "Accounts"
  3. If you have an Exchange account setup, click on it and navigate to the bottom of the settings to "delete"
  4. Click "add Account" followed by "Google", and enter your email address and Google password
  5. Note: This only get you your Google email. You can add your Google Contacts to the People app, but Google calendar is presently not available in the Calendar app
